Stockholm Traffic

Rush hour traffic in Stockholm is usually between the hours 07:00-08:30 in the morning and 16:30-18:30 in the afternoon on weekdays. Weekends generally see much less traffic.

Use caution when seeing the sign saying "skola" on the road and do not exceed 30 km/h as this sign indicates a school zone.

When driving try not to honk unless absolutely necessary, it is considered rude and it is not common, it is used to avoid an accident or indicate a serious transgression made by a fellow driver.

Congestion tax in Stockholm

A congestion tax is imposed on Swedish registered vehicles driving into and out of the Stockholm inner city zone on weekdays (Monday to Friday) between 6.30 a.m. and 6.29 p.m.

No tax is charged on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, the day before a public holiday or during the month of July.

Vehicles are registered automatically at “control points” during the times when the tax is charged. Each passage into or out of the inner city zone costs SEK 10, 15 or 20, depending on the time of day. The accumulated passages made by any vehicle during a particular day are aggregated into what is called a “tax decision”. The maximum amount charged per day and vehicle is SEK 60.

Tax decision

The accumulated passages made by any vehicle during a month are aggregated into what is called a “tax decision”. Once a month The Swedish Road Administration sends out a tax decision to the registered owner of the vehicle. This contains information about the total amount payable. The tax is to be paid into the Swedish Road Administration account no later than the end of the month after the month of notification. There is no possibility to pay at the control points.  It is the vehicle owner who is responsible for paying the tax even if notification of such has not been received.
