Since December, 2003, Sweden has an official hotel rating system. The system is handled by the Swedish Hotel- and Restaurant Association, SHR. The classification of hotels is conducted through yearly inspections. Classified hotels are awarded 1 to 5 stars.
The criteria
There are a total of around 130 Swedish criteria and they apply both to public areas and to the actual hotel rooms. In principle, the lowest standard shall determine the classification. The criteria shall reflect the Swedish hotel market's development and customers' requirements. The criteria are subject to annual review.
Examples of the requirements for the various star ratings:

For three stars: en-suite toilet and bathroom, telephone and TV in all guest rooms, access to guest PC, hotel staffed during daytime, lift, and no-smoking rooms. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
For four stars: the hotel must have an à la carte restaurant (not valid if the hotel is classified as Garni), minibar/room service, hotel staffed 24 hours a day, international TV channels, all guest rooms must have an internet connection, the hotel must offer photocopying facilities and laundry service, and furnishings must meet certain comfort requirements. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
The maximum rating of five stars is awarded to hotels with a pool and/or staffed gym, and/or staffed sauna with relaxation area, air conditioning. Safety deposit box in all guest rooms. Generally exclusive fittings and furnishings, suites. Maintenance standard appropriate to number of stars.
